For 2010, the Lunar New Year begins on Sunday, February 14 and the celebration lasts for two weeks. The Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & tai Chi is hosting its "Weeks of Workshops and Celebrations"  to help usher in the Year of the Tiger.

Check back frequently as workshops are still being added!

These events are open to the general public and do not require any previous experience. We recommend that you register in advance for any workshops you would like to attend. You may register at the door, but it will be on a "space-available" basis. We recommend that you arrive 10to 15  minutes early to any events to check in or register as needed.

Cleaning Celebration from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Before Chinese New Year starts it is important to clean in preparation for the new year. We clean away any bad luck left over from the previous year and make room for good luck coming in for the new year. This is for students, their family, and friends of Jing Ying. Come help your school get ready for the new year. Bring your favorite cleaning tools. We will have pizza and drinks afterwards.

Free performance of Lion Dance, Kung Fu & Tai Chi at the Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick, Maryland. The event runs from 1 to 3 pm. We will leave Jing Ying at 10:30 am. You can leave after the performance or hang out with us for another lion dance at an area restaurant where we will get fed!

Tea Tasting: Top 10 Teas of China, Part 1 from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Presented by The East West Tea Emporium in Arnold, and led by Lynayn Mielke, a tea professional with Level III Certification from the Specialty Tea Institute. You’ll get to try five of the top teas from China, learn about their proper preparation, and learn about their health benefits. Martial Hearts for Haiti, Kick-a-thon, demos, food and dance from 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm. A kick-a-thon with students performing 1,000 kicks interspersed with kung fu demonstrations will start the event. There will be Caribbean themed food and refreshments and around 7:00 pm DJs will provide music and lights for a Caribbean themed dance party. Suggested donation of $10 per person. Free Self-defense Workshop for Women from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. This will be geared for teens and adults. Learn basic skills for avoiding trouble and protecting yourself. The workshop will start with a discussion on safety to help you avoid trouble. That will be followed with a lesson on escape techniques for situations you weren't able to avoid. Finally, self-defense techniques will be covered for fighting back when you aren't able to escape easily.

Free Introductory Kids Kung Fu Class from 4:00 pm to 5:00pm. Suitable for children from 5 to 10, this workshop will include an introductory lesson in Kung Fu, will provide information on Chinese New Year, and  will teach some of the basics of Chinese Lion Dance.  A child-size lion head is available for the kids to use along with drums, cymbals and a gong. Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in.
