Jing Ying

2006 Severna Park
Independence Day Parade

This is one of the big annual events for Jing Ying Institute and a test of willpower and endurance for our students! For some reason, the parade usually seems to fall on one of the hottest and muggiest days of the year in Maryland. This year marks the 100 year anniversary of Severna Park, so the parade was even more special and we decided to have the Monkey King participate. Maybe he will be part of future performances as well! This is also the Year of the Dog, so we had several students march in dog make-up complete with ears.

As we march, we carry our banner, perform Lion Dance, pull the drums, play the drums, cymbals and gong, perform with weapons and perform empty hand techniques. It's hot, hard work, but everyone helps out. People take turns playing the lion (definitely a hot job!), performing, pouring water on each other to keep cool and handing out trinkets to the crowd. Near the end of the parade, we pass the judges station and perform for a score. There must have been over 140 entries in this year's parade and Jing Ying was awarded second place in the commercial division! You can see our plaque at the school.

After the parade, we had a short break, then demonstrated for the crowd at Cypress Creek Park. Many thanks to all the students who came out to march, play the lion, demonstrate forms and weapons, and help with handing water to students, pouring it on them, or spraying them!
